January on the Albermarle is a great time to get rid of cabin fever. It will require good cold weather gear. The temps in the day time are hopefully reaching upper 40's and lows in 20's and 30's at night can make for chilly day but with the fish biting you'll never notice. The stripers have already come in for the winter and staging in our tributaries to make the long run up river months away to there spawning grounds. Over the years I have always heard about fishing the "upper" Roanoke River in eastern North Carolina in the springtime during the famous Striped Bass spawning run, and have had it on my "bucket list" of fishing trips for some time. Spring Striper Migration is Near!

Spring Striper on the Roanoke River start migrating from their winter holes, upriver towards Weldon to spawn, this migration starts in the month of March until the majority of the river run stripers have reached their destination in Weldon, NC at the end of April thru May. During this migration of stripers the lower Roanoke and its creeks are on fire with numbers of feeding fish chasing the herring that migrate and spawn in our extensive fishery.
